General Joseph Warren was an important American political and military figure, central to the revolutionary unrest that took place in Massachusetts during the War of Independence. Bartlett, born in the United States, began his studies in Boston before moving to Paris, where he studied under Emmanuel Frémiet. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts, where he studied under Cavelier and met Rodin. He exhibited at the Salon from 1887 and at the 1900 Universal Exhibition. He set up his own foundry in his studio, which produced many of the animal bronzes exhibited at the Salon. He took part in major public commissions in the United States, particularly in New York. American museums preserve a large number of his works.
