Marcel Bodart (1916-1997) Small hippopotamus Shaded brown patina bronze proof, signed, justified "EA II/IV" on the right hind leg, signed with the monogram and bearing the Deroyaume foundry mark on the left hind leg. H. 10 L. 24 D. 6.5 cm Born in Saint Denis in 1916, Marcel Bodart spent his childhood in Carignan, learning to cut stone in his father's funeral marble business. Marcel began his artistic studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nancy. Returning from the war in 1940 and demobilized, he entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Here he studied with Henri Bouchard, among others. He was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1945. Fascinated by animals and an admirer of the sculptor François Pompom, Marcel Bodard spent a lot of time at the zoo and Jardin des Plantes, observing the animal world, which became the main theme of his work.
