Painter and sculptor Henri Wacquiez trained at the École Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs and then at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts. His taste for animal sculpture developed through contact with François Pompon at the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle, where he worked. He took part in numerous salons, including the Salon d'Automne, the Salon de Mai and the Salon des Artistes Animaliers. He was appointed director of the Casablanca School of Fine Arts until 1962, then curator of the Léon Dierx Museum of Fine Arts in Saint-Denis de la Réunion.
