A member of Milan's upper middle class, Guido Righetti first took up drawing and then sculpture, encouraged by family friend Paul Troubetzkoy, then professor at the Brera Academy. A frequent visitor to Milan's zoo and Museum of Natural History, he specialized in animal subjects. At the outbreak of the First World War, he retired to a family estate in the Brian-za valley. Surrounded by domestic and grazing animals, Righetti modeled an extensive bestiary. From the 1930s, under the influence of the Art Deco movement, his sculptures evolved towards a simplification marked by a purification of volumes and lines.
