Jean Ary Bitter (1883-1973) Bookends with elephants Pair of brown patina bronzes One signed "ARY BITTER SCLP" and marked "SUSSE FRERES EDRS PARIS" in a cartouche on the base. H. 28 cm and H. 20 cm, on wooden bases Ary Bitter, originally from Marseille, entered the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1902, where he trained with Ernest-Louis Barrias while working in Jules Coutan's studio. In 1910, he took part in the Salon des Artistes français, winning a gold medal in 1924. During the interwar period, Susse published twenty-nine Bitter models.
