A native of Angoulême, René Pajot won a scholarship to continue his training in Paris. There, he studied at the Académie Julian under Raoul Verlet, before joining Jules Coutan's studio at the École des Beaux-Arts. He then frequented Parisian artistic circles, making friends with Despiau, Valladon and Utrillo. After the First World War, during which he served as a volunteer, he returned to his Paris studio and exhibited regularly at the Salon des Indépendants from 1921. In 1929, he exhibited a Tête de jeune fille en pierre (Head of a Young Girl in Stone), which may correspond to our portrait. He moved to Angoulême in 1925, and in 1947 became the first teacher at the École des Beaux-Arts' new sculpture workshop.
