Charles Artus (1897-1978) - Lot 24
Charles Artus (1897-1978) Rooster Model created in 1926; circa 1927-1928 Bronze with brown-black patina Signed "CH. ARTUS" on the terrace Bears the founder's stamp "CIRE / C. VALSUA-NI / PERDUE H. 29 cm, on a black Belgian marble base H. 3 cm Born in Étretat in 1897 to a prominent family, Charles Joseph Artus left Normandy for Paris, where he devoted himself to animal sculpture. A pupil of animal sculptor Édouard Navellier, whom he first studied under, he followed in the footsteps of the great French animal artists of the early 20th century, notably François Pompon, whose assistant he had been in the 1920. This period was decisive in the evolution of his language towards a simplification of forms based on precise observation of nature. With tenderness, he sculpts small domestic animals such as dogs, cats and rabbits, as well as farmyard animals and birds, his favorite subjects. In his work, Artus manages to reconcile fidelity to the living model with modern stylization: he skilfully captures attitude, character and movement, while eliminating superfluous details. This sober yet expressive style places him at the crossroads of naturalism and Art Deco aesthetics. Charles Artus presented a plaster model of our rooster (number 109) at the Salon d'Automne in 1926, and a bronze version the following year.
