[Solomon] - The Song of Songs. - Berlin, S.D. Saltzman "Hasefer," 1923. Small folio, bound in a lovely publisher's cloth, with covers adorned with a gilded frieze flanked by a gilded medallion containing Hebrew text, and in the center, a circular design of silver birds on a gold background with the gold Hebrew title “Song of Songs.” The back cover is adorned with a motif of two facing lions, a menorah, and a Torah scroll with the Hebrew inscription “Hasefer” (the book); the spine is decorated with gold motifs; covers intact—stains on the covers— [3 pp. of title pages, 2 pp. of colophon, 2 pp. of title, 50 pp. of illustrated text]. The 52 illustrations (title and text) feature, on the right, the Hebrew text in a frame in the style of ancient illuminated Hebrew manuscripts, based on Zeew Raban’s color compositions, and on the left, the English translation withhandwritten indication of the chapter and verse reproduced, within a black frame (with touches of color); an illustrated serpent separates the pages. Printed in an edition of 500 copies (unjustified).
