Charron, Pierre. - *De la sagesse*, three books. Bordeaux, S - Lot 416
Charron, Pierre. - *De la sagesse*, three books. Bordeaux, Simon Millanges, 1611. Large 12mo bound in a soft, ivory-colored period vellum full leather binding, handwritten title on the spine - [5 ff., title page, preface], 751 pp., [7 pp. table]—copy partially unbound, small wormholes in the margins of the first three folios, small hole in the title page, paper slightly yellowed, old handwritten bookplates on the blank endpaper and one on the title page, scraped off. An edition based on the original published by the same publisher in 1601, without the omissions found in the 1604 edition. This treatise on moral philosophy builds upon the Essays of his friend Montaigne and presents itself as a defense of religious tolerance; it was condemned by Parliament, the theologians of the Sorbonne, and the Jesuits. The first book is devoted to self-knowledge, the second sets forth the general rules of wisdom, and the third defines the cardinal virtues: prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance.
