[Nièvre] - Travel writing case, with a fawn-colored calfskin - Lot 405
[Nièvre] - Travel writing case, with a fawn-colored calfskin label bearing the name "Jacques Manuel de la Nièvre, Member of the National Assembly." Long-grained Empire-style green morocco leather that opens to form a writing desk and reveals two gusseted compartments. The upper, hinged section of the writing desk is divided into four compartments (pencil case, inkwells, and a compartment for quills). The entire piece closes with a lock (no key included). Exterior shows signs of wear.
Contains personal papers of the Manuel family, including:
- Decree appointing Jacques Manuel as a senator (January 26, 1852) and a decree granting an allowance of 20,000 francs.
- Decree appointing Jacques Manuel to the rank of Officer of the Imperial Order of the Legion of Honor (June 30, 1853).
- Passport issued by the Senate to Senator Jacques Manuel, dated July 13, 1854.
- Printed document issued on the occasion of the funeral of Jacques-André Manuel (January 9, 1857; 3 copies).
- Portrait of Jacques-André Manuel published in the *Galerie des Représentants du Peuple* (1843) at the National Assembly
- Biographical notes on Messrs. Barbaroux and Manuel. Excerpt from the *Revue Historique et anecdotique*. Paris, July 1852—8vo, paperback, 4 folios, with dust jacket
- Bachelor of Arts diplomas for Ernest-Charles (1845) and Henri-Alexis (1848), sons of Jacques (on parchment).
- Bachelor of Laws diplomas for Ernest-Charles (1848) and Henri-Alexis (1850) (on parchment).
- Marriage of Catherine Manuel, daughter of Jacques and Jean-Alexis Grincourt (2 extracts and 1 certificate).

MANUEL Jacques-André, known as Manuel de la Nièvre (June 8, 1791 – January 9, 1857), was elected to the Senate on January 26, 1852 (term ended January 9, 1857). Previously, he had served in the Chamber of Deputies (from December 15, 1838, to February 2, 1839 - from March 2, 1839, to June 12, 1842; from July 9, 1842, to July 6, 1846; - from August 1, 1846, to February 24, 1848), in the National Assembly from April 23, 1848, to May 26, 1849 - from July 8, 1849, to December 2, 1851
