Hanuman fights a demon - Lot 263
Hanuman fights a demon Gouache on paper. Scene from the Ramayana, in which the monkey-faced Hindu god Hanuman strikes down a horned demon lying on the ground. Red margins. Inscription in devanagari on back (red margins cut, wear, folds, paint chips). India, Rajasthan, 19th century 18 x 26.5 cm A similar scene adorns a painting in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, (Hanuman striking a demon, no. inv. D.414-1889). The inscription in Devanagari refers to the fifth book of the Ramayana (Sundara Kanda). The beginning of the inscription is close to sarga (chapter) 47, verse 35 (sa tam samāvidhya sahasraśaḥ kapir), and the rest is more confused. It does mention the fifth book of the Rāmayaṇa, the Suṇḍara Kaṇḍa The beginning is close to sarga 47, verse 35 (sa tam samāvidhya sahasraśaḥ kapir), but the rest then becomes a bit muddled.
