Constantin KLUGE (1912-2003) - Lot 203
Constantin KLUGE (1912-2003) École des Beaux-Arts de Paris, class of 1937 Countryside near Shanghai Oil on canvas Signed lower right 65 x 50 cm Bibliography: Catalogue de la Société des Artistes français, 1951, no. 914, p. 35 In all likelihood, this work is one of three paintings presented by the artist at the 1951 Salon, entitled Campagne des environs de Shanghaï and exhibited alongside two other oil on canvas works, Sampans de la Chine centrale and Chinoise de Canton respectively. Kluge's paintings of China are rare on the market. The one presented here is one of his earliest works. It is typical of the painter's work, and only one other landscape of this type is referenced. Constantin Kluge was born into a wealthy family in Riga, Latvia, in 1912. Fleeing the Bolshevik revolution, the family moved to Manchuria in 1920, before settling in the French Concession in Shanghai, where the young man spent his adolescence. The artist continued his studies in Paris from 1931, graduating from the École des Beaux-Arts in 1937. The following year, he returned to Shanghai. An aspiring architect, the Sino-Japanese war disrupted his career. From then on, he spent his time painting (mainly landscapes and the occasional portrait) and, leaving Shanghai for Hong Kong in 1946, he began to exhibit his work, which met with great success. Kluge then decided to return to Paris to pursue his career. In 1951, he exhibited at the Salon and aroused the enthusiasm of his contemporaries. From the 1960s onwards, he was represented by the prestigious Galerie Findlay, and in 1990 was awarded the Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur.
