Jean-Francis AUBURTIN (1866-1930) - Lot 193
Jean-Francis AUBURTIN (1866-1930) Bathers, Lake Annecy from Talloires, stormy sky Pastel, gouache and pencil on rag paper Monogrammed lower left 36 x 61 cm on view Related work: Symboliste de la mer, 1990-1991, Éd. Hachette, Ville de Paris, Vue du lac d'Annecy depuis Talloires, p. 126, illustrated under no. 107 Jean-Francis Auburtin regularly stayed at his friends Albert and Charlotte Besnard's property on Lake Annecy. The couple owned a house with a vast Italianate-inspired studio, a favorite meeting place for many of the artists in their circle. From the private pontoon of this residence, Auburtin took several views of the lake and surrounding mountains, notably the mountain of Entrevernes, identifiable in the present composition as well as in other contemporary works. The scene is distinguished by the presence of two nude bathers, an unusual motif in the artist's production, which is more focused on symbolist, idealized representations of nature. This inclusion may reflect the influence of his friend, the painter Paul Chabas, also close to the Besnards and known for his studies of female nudes in the same setting.
