Jacques MALLET (1901-1995), - Lot 239
Jacques MALLET (1901-1995), Medieval knight with shield Carved and polychromed wood Traces of wood-destroying insects 50 x 58 x 20 cm Bears an Atelier Jacques Mallet label on the terrace. Medicine and sculpture would seem to be worlds apart, except for the skilful use of sometimes sharp metal instruments... However, Dr. Mallet managed to practice both concurrently. A simple amateur, he never exhibited and kept all his work in his Bayonnais studio... just a few hundred pieces. Art Brut? Art Naïf? Both, of course. Untrained, he was able to look across schools and eras and eras and invented a surprising, creative, funny and moving imaginary world of characters made from trunks, branches and roots in waxed or painted wood. The influence of Catalan sculpture, South America America, the Middle Ages (Christ on the Cross, Virgins in Majesty), the Pacific or Merlin the Enchanter accompanied by a few imps... With this inventive eye, his real talent lies in his ability to imagine future (nothing to do with driftwood). He also knows how to shape terracotta into Daumier-style statues-charges, which are the only ones to bear his signature. Jacques Mallet, a great lover of sculpture, has also written several books on his passion L'art roman de l'ancien Anjou, Édition Picard 1984-2000; Angers: le château, Édition Images du Patrimoine.
