Georges Clément de Swiecinski (1878-1958) The Dormition of the Virgin Bronze bas-relief with golden-brown patina Signed and dated "Georges Cl. de Swiecinski / 1922". Bears the founder's stamp "CIRE / C. VALSUANI / PERDUE H. 35.5 x L. 51.5 cm This relief by self-taught sculptor Georges-Clément de Swiecinski depicts the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, surrounded by the apostles and her son Christ, who has come to collect her soul, assisted by numerous angels and singing children. Inspired by Byzantine and medieval art, the stone model adorned the portal of the Virgin in the Pavillon des Missions at the 1937 Exposition des Arts et Techniques.
