Charles Artus (1897-1978) - Lot 152
Charles Artus (1897-1978) Leghorn cockerel Model created circa 1930 Plaster Signed "CH. ARTUS Signed "bien affectueusement". H. 22.9 x W. 25 x D. 9.2 cm Charles Artus took up sculpture in Edouard Navellier's workshop. A regular visitor to the Jardin des Plantes, he specialized in animal sculpture. His meeting with François Pompon, whose assistant he became, encouraged him to move away from the naturalist style of his training and concentrate on volume, while retaining the study of animal character. In 1931, he joined the "Groupe des Douze" and exhibited at numerous shows, including the Salon des Animaliers, the Salon d'Automne, the Salon des Artistes Français and the Salon des Indépendants.
