Jean Ary Bitter (1883-1973) Bookends with elephants Pair of brown patina bronzes One signed "Ary Bitter SCLP" and marked "SUSSE FRES EDRS PARIS" in a cartouche on the base. H. 28 cm and H. 17 cm, on elm burl bases Ary Bitter, originally from Marseille, entered the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1902, where he trained with Ernest-Louis Barrias while working in Jules Coutan's studio. In 1910, he took part in the Salon des Artistes français, winning the gold medal in 1924. During the interwar period, Susse published twenty-nine Bitter models. .
