A student of Alexandre Guionnet and then François Rude, Auguste Caïn specialized in animal sculpture. The Jardin des Plantes became his place of apprenticeship and observation, enabling him to create sculptures that he exhibited from 1846 onwards. In association with Pierre-Jules Mêne, whose daughter he married in 1842, he collaborated on a number of animal bronzes. His contact with his father-in-law enabled him to acquire the talent that earned him numerous public commissions and an eminent name among 19th-century animal sculptors.
