19th century French school after the antique The Dying Gladiator Published by Barbedienne from 1849 Bronze with light brown patina Bears the founder's mark "F. BARBEDIENNE. FONDEUR" and the stamp "REDUCTION MECANIQUE A. COLLAS". Bears on the underside the incised letters "VV" and in ink the number "97027" and the letters "oge". H. 28 cm, terrace W. 55 x D. 24 cm Some dents and patina wear This model of the Dying Gladiator was much admired by French connoisseurs in the 19th century. The antique marble was ceded to French troops following the Treaty of Tolentino in 1797. It was exhibited from 1800 at the Musée Central des Arts, before being sent back to Rome in 1816.
