In-4 bound in full black chagrin, gilt fillet framing the boards, spine ribbed with gilt letters "D" and "M" in boxes 2 and 4 (as all copies) - slight spidering to the spines, corners pierced, one head cup split, freckles on the endpapers - [2 ff.], VIII (preface), 268 pp., [1 f., letter]. Frontispiece portrait of the author, engraved by É. Denain. Illustrated with woodcuts and 4 pen-and-ink drawings by the author. Unpublished work, of which only 100 copies are said to have been printed, reserved for insiders who agreed in writing (cf. letter in fine) not to divulge its contents. Extremely rare first edition.
