Voltaire. - The League or Henry the Great. Epic poem. Genève, Jean Mokpap, [Rouen, Viret], 1723. In-8, bound in full olive-green morocco, the covers mosaiced with a repeating decoration in imitation of a pavement, alternating medallions on a red and brown morocco ground enclosing a gilded floral motif, the whole on a semiset of gilded tassels and edged with a gilded frame, spine adorned with alternating red and brown mosaic quatrefoils, gilded author and title, 2 gilded fillets around the edges, wide listel spine flaps adorned with gilded roulettes, gray moire endpapers, gilded chased edges. The whole in imitation of a 16th-century binding (attributable to Stikeman). - VIII, 231 pp. (including 161 to 231 for remarks on the 9 songs).this original edition published by Abbé Desfontaines was printed in Rouen by the bookseller Viret from an incomplete manuscript containing only 9 songs. It was not until the London reprint in 1728 that the definitive title "La Henriade" appeared, in 10 considerably revised cantos. Copy enriched with a portrait of Voltaire by Largillière/Demautort; a portrait of Henri IV by Dautel; 10 engravings h-t by Moreau engraved by Simonet (5), Girardet, Delvaux (2), Ribault, Trière, corresponding to the ten songs; 10 engravings h-t by Leprince engraved by Pauquet, corresponding to the ten songs in 2 states (before and after the letter); the engraved title of "Commentaire sur la Henriade par feu Mr de la Beaumelle" published in Berlin and Paris, le Jay, 1775, with the portrait of Voltaire, La Beaumelle and Fréron in medallion (engraved by A. de St Aubin after Marillier). The song plates are out of order from the 6th song onwards.
