Charles Malfray (1887-1940) The dancer 1938 Terracotta Signed "MALFRAY 22 x 12 x 2 cm For the 1937 Exposition Universelle in Paris, Malfray worked on La Danse, a monumental sculpture for the courtyard of the Musée Municipal d'Art Moderne on Quai de Tokyo. In the following years, he created several sculptures of Danseuses, including this relief: "With the series of danseuses, originally inspired by Isadora Duncan, whose inner tension he retained above all, he sought a new form of balance, based on fullness as much as emptiness" (Antoinette Le Normand Romain in exhibition catalog, Rodin y la revolucion de la escultura : de Camille Claudel a Giacometti, Barcelona, Fundación La Caixa, October 29, 2004- February 27, 2005, Barcelona, Fundación La Caixa, 2004).
