Georges Hilbert (1900-1982) Bovid in profile 1925 Black pencil on paper Signed and dated lower right "Hilbert 25". 21 x 26.5 cm Born in 1900 in Nemours, Algeria, Georges Hilbert entered the Oran School of Fine Arts in 1918. That same year, however, he moved to Paris, where he continued his studies at the École des Arts Décoratifs and the École des Beaux-Arts. It was mainly at the Jardin des Plantes, in front of the animals, that he developed his drawing skills. He then made direct cuts in blocks of limestone, granite or marble. Specializing in animal sculpture, Hilbert joined the Groupe des Douze created by his friend François Pompon in 1931. He worked alongside other animal sculptors including Charles Artus, Marcel Lémar, Jeanne Poupelet and Paul Jouve.
