Gilbert Privat (1892-1969) - Lot 147
Gilbert Privat (1892-1969) Fountain project for the town of Malakoff 1951 - 1955 Terracotta Signed "Gilbert Privat" on side edge Minor restoration 50 x 42 x 11 cm. In the 1950s, Gilbert Privat received numerous public commissions, including the Fontaine aux Enfants for the town of Malakoff, which borders the pond in the Parc Léon-Salagnac. Our delicate terracotta is most probably the preparatory project for the monumental marble version, installed in 1954 and inaugurated in 1955. It was recently restored. Gilbert Privat, son of a woodcarver, was born in Toulouse. He attended the Beaux-Arts in his native city, before continuing his training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1910, where he studied under Jules Coutan. From 1920, he exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français, presenting works on a variety of subjects: childhood, religious art, allegories... and received several commissions for war memorials. He also created works for the publishing industry, notably in wood for D.I.M. and in cookie for the Manufacture de Sèvres. At the 1937 Exposition Universelle, he created several bas-reliefs for the pontifical pavilion, including Figure (in mahogany); Flore; Diane à la biche (in stone). From the 1920s onwards, he distinguished himself by creating numerous bas-reliefs in wood, stone or slate, both small-scale and intended to adorn facades, as in Bordeaux and Paris. The Musée des Beaux-Arts (Bordeaux), the Musée des Années Trente (Boulogne-Billancourt), the Musée de la Piscine (Roubaix) and the Musée Despiau-Wlérick (Mont-de-Marsan) hold several of his works.
