Alfred Janniot (1889-1969) - Lot 121
Alfred Janniot (1889-1969) Uranie Painted plaster 51 x 26 x 11 cm (with base) Traces of restoration Related literature: - D'UCKERMAN Patris, L'art dans la vie moderne, Paris, Flammarion, 1937. - Michel Giraud, Fabienne Fravolo, Alfred Janniot 1889- 1969 : propos mythologiques et modernes, Paris, Galerie Michel Giraud : Librairie du Passage, 2006. Born in Paris, Alfred Janniot began training at the École des Beaux-Arts in 1907, in the studio of sculptor Jean-Antoine Injalbert. His studies were interrupted by the war, and he was a late winner of the Prix de Rome in 1919. Influenced by ancient mythology and classical sculpture, and encouraged by Bourdelle, Janniot received major commissions, including the Monument aux Morts in Nice in 1924. He collaborated with architect Michel Roux-Spitz, notably in Bordeaux and Dinard. In 1931, he created a monumental stone bas-relief for the façade of the Musée des Colonies, built for the Exposition Coloniale. He was one of the artists on the Normandie liner, for which he created a major sculptural group and a tapestry. For the 1937 Exposition Internationale, he created several sculptures, and three bas-reliefs adorned the façade of the Palais de Tokyo: L'Allégorie des Arts, La Légende de la Terre and La Légende de la Mer.
