Marcel Gaumont (1880-1962) - Lot 119
Marcel Gaumont (1880-1962) Eros and Psyche Plaster 25 x 20.5 cm. Mounted on a 29 x 32 x 2 cm panel. A native of Tours and a student of Louis-Ernest Barrias, Jules Coutant and François Sicart at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Marcel Gaumont was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1908. After the Great War, several towns, including Tours, Laon and Sorigny, commissioned a Monument aux Morts from him. He exhibits regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français (awarded in 1935). For the 1937 International Exhibition, he creates four bas-reliefs for the façade of the Palais de Tokyo. This plaster cast is a preparatory study for the bas-relief Éros et Psyché, described by Patris d'Uckerman as "of rare plastic perfection, the rigor of a rectilinear geometry, made of parallelisms and perpendicularities, transfigures voluptuous sentiment through style." The bas-relief is reproduced on the cover of his book L'art dans la vie moderne. Related literature: D'UCKERMAN Patris, L'art dans la vie moderne, Paris, Flammarion, 1937.
