Jan and Joël Martel (1896 - 1966) - Lot 109
Jan and Joël Martel (1896 - 1966) Standing dancer Study for the monument to Claude Debussy Graphite Signed lower right "J.Martel". 28 x 21.7 cm. This exceptional set of five studies by the Martel brothers comes from the former collection of Bordeaux industrialist and art lover Henry Frugès (1879-1974). He commissioned the sculptor brothers to work on the renovation of his townhouse, alongside alongside Jean Dupas, René Buthaud, Lucien Schnegg and Robert Wlérick. He acquired these drawings while Jan and Joël Martel had been working on their Monument à Debussy project since 1919, which they presented at the Salon d'Automne in 1923. "It is not unthinkable that some of the sheets in the Frugès collection were part of this exhibition [...]" (Bruno Gaudichon, 2016.) Initially intended for the town of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, the monument was eventually entrusted to Antoine Bourdelle. A veritable Art Deco manifesto, the Martel brothers' monument was placed on boulevard Lannes in Paris in 1932, not far from the composer's former apartment. In their studio, the poses of the famous dancer François Malkovsky (1889-1982) for photo shoots attest to their research into movement and the synthesizing of form in their designs, also explored alongside the Swedish choreographer Jean Börlin (1893-1930).
