Jan and Joël Martel (1896-1966) - Lot 106
Jan and Joël Martel (1896-1966) Dancer Patinated plaster 41 x 20 x 14 cm. Provenance: workshop of Jan and Joël Martel by descent. A certificate of authenticity from Madame Florence Martel will be sent to the buyer. A rare studio plaster, the Dancer evokes the sculptor brothers' stylistic explorations of movement. A theme dear to the precursor artists, who were close to the famous Swedish choreographer Jean Börlin (1893-1930), the Dancer, all curves in a delicate play of balance, was intended for the bronze edition, of which no print has yet been identified. Sculptors among the most representative of Art Deco, the Martel brothers collaborated with Mallet-Stevens for the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs, the 1928 Saint-Jean-de-Luz casino and the 1929 Union des Artistes Modernes (UAM) pavilion. The exceptional ensemble assembled here bears witness to the modernity sought by the sculptor brothers, who renewed figuration through cubist influence and geometric form, as well as their personal interest in dance and music.
