[DREYFUS (Mathieu)] - Lot 62
[DREYFUS (Mathieu)] Portrait of Mathieu Dreyfus seated Graphite drawing enhanced with pastel. Signature: M. David (?) 27 x 20 cm on view Drawing framed. On the back of the frame, label of the enca- Frédéric Petit. Work appraised and framed. This fine portrait features Mathieu Dreyfus (1857-1930), brother and ardent defender of Alfred Dreyfus. Several reproductions were made, confirming the family tradition. Two of these reproductions are in the MAHJ (Musée d'art et d'histoire du judaïsme), in the Fonds Alfred Dreyfus, under the symbol: Inv.97.17.057.002 [Two printed copies of a pencil drawing, one of which is glued to cardboard: the prints are roughly the same format as the drawing]. Mathieu Dreyfus was one of Alfred Dreyfus's strongest supporters, and one of the first Dreyfusards. He found the lawyer Demange to defend his brother in 1894. Together with Joseph Reinach, whose son Adolphe Reinach would later marry Mathieu Dreyfus's daughter Marguerite Dreyfus, he followed the first trial, campaigning for it to be held in public. In vain: the first trial was held behind closed doors, with the conviction and consequences that we now know. Bernard Lazare, another ardent defender of Alfred Dreyfus, called Mathieu his "admirable brother" and Émile Zola his "heroic brother". See : L'Affaire telle que je l'ai vécue, Paris, Bernard Grasset, 1978; Dreyfusards! Souvenirs de Mathieu Dreyfus et autres inédits, edited and presented by Robert Gauthier, Paris, 1965. Provenance: Marguerite DREYFUS, daughter of Mathieu DREYFUS, Madame Françoise BECK née REINACH (granddaughter of Mathieu DREYFUS), then by descent.
