Sébastien I LECLERC (Metz 1637 - Paris 1714) - Lot 2
Sébastien I LECLERC (Metz 1637 - Paris 1714) Wheel system for transporting column shafts, illustration for Vitruvius' Ten Books of Architecture. Pen and black and gray ink, gray wash. Inscribed lower left Sb Le Clerc. 23 x 21 cm Our drawing is illustration LX of chapter II of Book X, from Vitruvius' Les Dix livres d'architecture de Vitruve, corrigez et traduits nouvellement en françois, avec des notes et des figures, published in Paris in 1673, edited by Claude Perrault. The reverse engraving was done by Gérard Scotin. The book was so successful, not least because of its numerous engravings, that it was republished in an enlarged version in 1684, before being translated in various countries. Sébastien I Leclerc was a draughtsman, engraver and military engineer. He learned to draw from his father Laurent Lefèvre, a goldsmith. His engravings became highly prized, and he gave up his career as a military engineer to come to Paris, where he became Charles Lebrun's protégé. Colbert brought him into the King's exclusive service in 1672. He regained his freedom, devoting himself to engraving. The most important editions published in France were illustrated by his work. He also left numerous prints and wrote technical works.
