René LETOURNEUR (1898-1990) Woman and child 1980 Naxos marble Signed (on the edge of the terrace) : LETOURNEUR 53 x 22 x 13 cm Artist's restorations in progress A number of drawings (preserved in the artist's family) and a sketch (see cat. no. 152) reveal the long maturation of Femme et enfant. Whereas in Maternité (cat. no. 123), René Letourneur depicts a little game between a mother and her baby, in Femme et enfant, the face-to-face encounter takes place in a tender embrace. A large charcoal drawing takes up the theme of a young child being held by its mother and gazing at each other (see cat. no. 154).
