Jean Ary Bitter (1883-1973) Bookends with elephants Pair of green patina bronzes One is inscribed "ARY BITTER Sclpt / SUSSE FRES EDRS PARIS" in a cartouche. H. 25.5 cm and H. 15.5 cm Originally from Marseille, Ary Bitter entered the École des Beaux-arts de Paris in 1902. There, he trained with Ernest-Louis Barrias while working in Jules Coutan's studio. In 1910, he took part in the Salon des Artistes français, where he was awarded a gold medal in 1924. Susse published twenty-nine of Bitter's designs during the interwar period, including his highly successful Elephants.
