Arthur Dupagne (1895-1961) Tam-tam player Bronze with brown patina Signed "DUPAGNE" on the terrace behind the left foot Bears the founder's mark "Susse Fres Edts Paris" on the right edge of the terrace. Bears the founder's circular insert, the "BRONZE" stamp, the number "5" and the words "cire perdue" on the terrace edge. H. 37.5 cm A native of Liège, Arthur Dupagne trained with Georges Petit and Oscar Berchmans at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts. During a stay in the Belgian Congo from 1927 to 1935, he discovered the sculpture of indigenous peoples. On his return, Dupagne was commissioned to create monumental sculptures in the Africanist style for several World Fairs, including those in Paris in 1938 and New York in 1939.
