Henry CROS (1840-1907) - Lot 80
Henry CROS (1840-1907) Lot of three drawings under the same pass Esquisses pour le portrait ou buste de Washington, pencil on paper, signature stamp, 66 x 48 cm à vue Soiling, wetness, tears and stains. The lot A multi-faceted artist and researcher, Henry Cros (1840-1907) was a sculptor, painter, ceramist and glassmaker. His original contributions to the history of modern polychrome sculpture are marked by the colors of his modeled waxes, then by the softness and sensuality of his watercolor-toned glass pastes. A sculptor of color, he is also an artist of rare and new materials, and is notably the inventor of glass sculpture, developing an innovative technique inspired by ancient glassmaking. A talented portraitist, he was appointed professor of drawing at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier in 1871, but soon resigned to devote himself entirely to his own artistic work. He created a dreamlike universe blending Renaissance poetry, fairy tales and ancient stories, all tinged with symbolism. An exhibition dedicated to him at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris from March 6 to May 26, 2024, features numerous sketches and drawings that bear witness to the artist's creative process.
