First edition and first Elzévirienne edition of Descartes' philosophical works, a text in which he takes up and develops the famous Cogito ergo sum set out in the Discourse on Method in 1637. The Latin text of the Principia was first translated into French by Abbé Picot in 1647. The privilege printed on the verso of the title page and dated May 4, 1637, is, according to Nodier, "the most memorable monument to the protection that the kings of France have accorded to letters".
