Leyser, Johann, (pseud. Theophilus Aletheus).... - Lot 15 - Crait + Müller
Leyser, Johann, (pseud. Theophilus Aletheus). - Polygamia triumphatrix id est discursus politicus de polygamia. Lund, sumtibus authoris, 1682. In-4 half-brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated - Minor paper scuffing on boards and edges - [5] ff. n. ch. (title, preface), 565 pp, [16] ff. n. ch. (additions, tables), text on two columns, bookplate engraved with the arms of Jean-Louis Calendrini (18th century). Handwritten annotation: "Vendu 12 livres 2 sols chez m. le comte Hoym n° 638". Third and most complete edition, after the two drafts on the same subject in the two successive editions of 1674 and 1676, which were much less developed. A very curious work by the Danish Reformed theologian Johann Leyser (1631-1684), one of the few in his day to argue that polygamy, in addition to having been specially authorized by God for the providential diffusion of the Jewish people in the Old Testament (a classic thesis, found among Catholics and Protestants alike), was most in line with His will and corresponded to a positive commandment on His part - a thesis that was in the minority, even in Reformed circles, and which must have resulted in a strange multiplication of heart attacks among theologians of all gowns. In any case, his theses did not bring good luck to Leyser, who wandered Europe without a job, died in poverty, and was perfectly celibate... Enclosed: Innocent XI. - Index librorum prohibitorum jussu editus usque ad annum 1681 eidem accedit in fine appendix usque ad mensem junii 1704. Rome, typis camera apostolica, 1704. In-8 half calf, smooth spine, red morocco title-piece, brown morocco date-piece - Corners pierced, damp stains - [24], 568 pp. Provenance: Château de Marcellus
