Brown, red and gold embroidered silk TENTURE, decorated with a frieze of the Eight Buddhist Emblems, a frieze featuring a qirin, a phoenix, a dragon and a turtle, alternated with friezes of stylized shou characters. Glass inlay (missing). China, late Qing dynasty. 223 x 76 cm Attached is a silk piece embroidered in gold on a cream ground with a dragon and stylized shou characters. China. 45 x 33.5 cm A family tradition, the dragon piece was brought back from China by Mr. Ernest Derrien, commander of the Surcouf submarine in the 1930s, and passed down through his descendants.
