Bridgman, in the 1870s, was particularly interested in the antique period. The figure of the priest in the foreground is common to several of his works. We find this figure in The Funeral of a Mummy, exhibited at the 1877 Salon, and The Procession of the Sacred Bull, exhibited at the 1879 Salon.
