ITURI MASK, Northeastern Democratic Republic... - Lot 28 - Crait + Müller
ITURI MASK, Northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo Wood with light patina, black pigments. H. 22 cm Face carved in clean lines of construction, the gaze in short angular piercings under the high arches, the nose straight and almost crude, the mouth open on teeth described in fine strips. Treated in reserve on a light background, a rich decoration covers the entire mask. Carrying holes on the periphery. Used during initiation rites by young boys, these masks, depending on the motifs that adorned them, embodied figures of ancestors or spirits in anthropomorphic, zoomorphic or composite form. Known to ethnologists for their drawings on bark, musical instruments and body ornamentation, the Pygmies of the Ituri equatorial forest are less well known for their masks. Marc Léo Felix's extensive fieldwork has brought the masks of this region to light. PROVENANCE: former private collection, Milan. Cf. Marc Leo Felix, Ituri - The Distribution of polychrome masks in Northeast Zaire, Editions Fred Jahn, Munich, 1992.
