Joël and Jan Martel (1896-1966) - Lot 179
Joël and Jan Martel (1896-1966) Angel with lyre Plaster Signed "J. MARTEL" on base H : 90 cm This musical angel is a remake of the Angel with lyre executed in 1955 by the Martel brothers for the church of Saint Rémi de Charbogne in the Ardennes. From 1917 onwards, in the post-war reconstruction period, a number of artists devoted themselves to sacred art. Artists' groups were created, such as l'Arche, Les Ateliers d'art sacré and La Société de Saint-Jean. The brothers Joël and Jan Martel made an important contribution to this burgeoning revival of religious art, with major projects such as the chapel on the Normandie liner, the façade of Notre-Dame de la Trinité in Blois, and the high altar at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Luxembourg. Related literature: -Emmanuel Bréon, et alii, Joël et Jan Martel, sculpteur (1896-1966), Paris, Livres d'art, Gallimard, 1996, pp. 143-157.
