FRENCH SCHOOL circa 1780 The death of Archimedes Oil on canvas 81 x 92 cm No frame PROVENANCE: anonymous sale, Paris, Hôtel Drouot (Daguerre), February 27, 2013, no. 40, reproduced; acquired at this sale by the current owner. A famous Greek scientist, Archimedes met a tragic end during the Second Punic War (213 to 212 BC). The Romans, commanded by General Marcus Claudius Marcellus, laid siege to Syracuse and managed to enter the city despite the defensive systems Archimedes had invented to repel them. The scene depicted is the fateful moment when a Roman soldier murders the scientist in the middle of the city, which is engulfed in flames and fighting.
