Ary Jean Bitter (1883-1973) Elephants Pair of bookends in bronze with brown patina Bearing on a cartouche "ARY BITTER Sclpt. SUSSE Fres Edrs Paris". H. 28.6 cm and H. 19 cm Ary Bitter, originally from Marseille, entered the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1902, where he trained with Ernest-Louis Barrias while working in Jules Coutan's studio. In 1910, he took part in the Salon des Artistes Français, winning the gold medal in 1924. During the interwar period, Susse published twenty-nine Bitter models.
