On his return from Tunis, Théodore Rivière presented several works inspired by Gustave Flaubert's novel Salammbô at the Salon: L'Éléphant d'Hamilcar in 1893 and Salammbô chez Matho in 1895. Both Orientalist themes met with great success. Published in 1862, Flaubert's novel made famous the legend of Hamilcar's elephant, which gave the city of Carthage victory over the mercenaries.
