SEVRES TWO LARGE circular porcelain COMPOST named compotier Hessois 1830, with polychrome decoration of garlands of flowers and braids on a nankin background with gold rosettes, frieze of ivy in gold on the inner edge. One marked CC interlaced and crowned, decorated with Sevres 30, the other marked Sevres 30. 19th century, 1830. L. 40 cm, H. 9 cm PROVENANCE: service of Prince Elector Wilhelm II of Hesse-Cassel (1777-1847). These two large compotiers are part of a service of 566 pieces including 348 plates created for Elector Wilhelm II of Hesse-Kassel, named Service Botanique, couronne de fleurs pour la Hesse in the archives of the Sèvres factory. The service was delivered to Mr. de Schaumbourg, representative of the Elector in 1830. The shape of these large compotiers is created specifically for this service in 1830 and is called Hessian compotiers 1830. The service originally consisted of eight compotiers of this shape. A large part of the service is preserved in the Schloss Fanaserie in Fulda and discussed by M. Miller, Königliches Porzellan aus Frankreich, Sammlerstüke und Service der Manufaktur Vincennes-Sèvres, 1999, pp. 89-133. Four of the 1830 Hessian compotiers are still present in the service, one reproduced by Miller, op. cit. pp. 116-117, as well as the drawing still preserved in the archives of the Sèvres factory. Part of the service was in the collections of Anna Thomson Dodge, Christie's, New York, September 27-29, 1971, lot 693 and then Christie's, New York, June 7, 2012, lot 45.
