ITALIAN school of the middle of the XIXth... - Lot 171 - Crait + Müller
ITALIAN school of the middle of the XIXth century after Antonio CANOVA (1757-1822) Venus italica Bronze with brown patina. Bears a signature CANOVA on the edge of the terrace. H. 32 cm REFERENCE WORK: Antonio Canova, Italian Venus, 1804, white marble, Palatine Gallery, Pitti Palace, Florence This charming little bronze is inspired by the famous marble of the Venus Italica executed by the master of the neoclassical school, Antonio Canova, at the request of Louis I of Etruria to replace the illustrious antique figure of the Medici Venus taken away by Napoleonic troops in 1802. Its bronze edition, with a visible variation in the drapery, shows the great fame of this Venus, a neoclassical "transcription" of the 19th century.
