Set of 9 works of the XVII - XVIIIth century. 1/ - Montaigne, Michel de. - Les Essais de Michel seigneur de Montaigne. New edition, exactly expurgated of the defects of the previous ones, according to the true original...Amsterdam [Lyon], Aux Dépens de la Compagnie, 1781. 3 strong small volumes in-8, bound in full contemporary calf, spines decorated, title and giblets, marbled edges - spines restored, 1 cap broken, cracks in 2 jaws - lxx, [2], 543 pp.; [2 ff.], 820 pp. 2 ff.], 663 pp. Portrait of the author in frontispiece. Good edition enlarged in the margin with the names of the quoted authors and the version of the passage. Quite a nice edition according to Brunet (1839). 2/ - La Chambre, Martin Cureau de. - L'Art de connoistre les hommes. Amsterdam, Jacques Le Jeune, 1660. in-12 bound in overlapping vellum, handwritten title on the spine (later) - [5 ff. engraved allegorical title, epistle], 278 pp, [7 pp. table] - cut out a small part of the lower margin of the title (without text). Cureau de La Chambre (1594-1669) physician to Louis XIV and philosopher, led throughout his life a philosophical reflection on man, his physiology and his psychology. His knowledge of the human soul was such that it is reported that Louis XIV "was so convinced of the talent of this skilful doctor to judge the character of people according to their physiognomy, that this monarch was often determined in his choices only after having consulted this oracle" (Tyrtée Tastet, Histoire des quarante fauteuils de l'Académie française depuis la fondation jusqu'à nos jours [History of the forty chairs of the French Academy from its foundation to the present day], 1635-1855). 3/ - M. Acci Plauti [Plautus]. - Comoediae superst[ites] XX...Amsterdal, Johann Janson,1650. In-18, bound in full vellum with period cover, handwritten title on the back - 640 pp., [3ff.] This work printed in small type contains the 20 comedies of Plautus that have come down to us complete. 4/ - Erasmus. - The Praise of Folly... translated by M. de Gueudeville. Leide, Pierre Vander, 1713. In-12 bound in full calf, very damaged - loose quires, marginal loss of 3 leaves and 3 folding plates, loss of catalog in-fine - [16 ff.], 296 pp. illustrated with 1 plate with portraits of Erasmus, Th. More, Holbein, 1 allegorical frontispiece-title, 1 vignette to the dedication, 5 folding plates; and 75 engravings halfway through. It seems to miss 1 folding plate. The engravings are by Holbein. 2 works in poor condition are enclosed: 5/ - Oeuvres de Piron (2 vol.in-18, London, 1782). 6/ - Matthieu Casimir Sarbierius. - Lyricorum...
