Montorgueil, Georges. - Le Café Concert.... - Lot 152 - Crait + Müller
Montorgueil, Georges. - Le Café Concert. Paris, L'Estampe Originale, [1893]. Paperback album consisting of 15 pp. of text by Montorgueil and illustrated with 11 lithographs by Toulouse-Lautrec and 11 by Ibels (including the cover) - Dusty cover, with small losses to the headpieces - The plates represent various artists of the Café-Concert: Jane Avril, Yvette Guilbert, Paula Brébion, Mary Hamilton, Edmée Lescot, Aristide Bruant, Caudieux, etc. This series by Toulouse-Lautrec and Henri-Gabriel Ibels captures the essence of Parisian life and the dynamism of its nights. Far from the stuffy atmosphere of theaters or concert halls, these "no-holds-barred" places flourished during the Belle Epoque and launched artists of remarkable modernity. The two painters portray here the most famous cabaret stars of the time, in the movement of their "epileptic choreography" or the grace of their poses. The great names of the café-concerts appear under frank and assured features, inspired by Japanese woodcuts.
