A collection of historical works concerning the 16th, 17th a - Lot 109
A collection of historical works concerning the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. 1/ - Varillas, Antoine. - History of François premier. Paris, Claude Barbin, 1685. 2 vols. in-4, bound in full calf, spine with 5 nerves, decorated entrenerfs, spine ends decorated with a roulette - Worn boards, corners pierced, headbands worn, jaws partially split, some pages torn without lack of text - [24 ff], 593 pp. ; 612, CIII pp. illustrated with 14 bandeaux by C. Colin Engraved bookplate "Mr de Villevieille Me des comptes" (18th century). First French edition after the original published the year before in The Hague. Varillas' works were initially a resounding success before falling victim to a cabal orchestrated by the Scottish historian and theologian Gilbert Burnet and relayed by Protestant historians, led by Pierre Bayle. His History of Francis I is unfortunately marred by the same errors as most of his other works, including the uncertainty of sources when they are not invented from scratch. Despite these flaws, this History reads like a novel, in an alert style. The work has been read as evidenced by numerous handwritten marginal notes from several hands. 2/ - Letters of Nicolas de Neufville seigneur de Villeroy, Minister and Secretary of State, written to Jacques de Matignon, Marshal of France, since the year 1581, until the year 1596. Montélimart, s.n., 1749. In-12 bound in full tan calf with smooth spine, brown title page - 236 pp. for 79 letters. 3/ - Raguenet (abbé). - History of the Viscount of Turenne. Paris, Les Libraires Associés, 1769. 2 volumes in-12 bound in one volume in full contemporary calf with boards stamped with the iron of the royal college of Toulouse, spine ribbed, title page - [4 ff.], 288 pp. ; [2 ff.], 222 pp., [3 ff.] A fine copy. 4/ - [Mouffle d'Angerville, Barthélemy] - Vie privée de Louis XV, ou principaux évènemens, particularités et anecdotes de son règne. London, John Peter Lytom, 1788. 4 volumes in-12, bound in full contemporary calf, boards decorated with a triple gilt fillet, smooth spine decorated, gilt title and tomaison. 5/ - Robertson, William. - History of Scotland, during the reigns of Queen Mary, and King James VI, until the accession of this prince to the throne of England, with a précis of the history of Scotland, which precedes this period.
