Marcel GILI (1914-1993) - Lot 123
Marcel GILI (1914-1993) Spring, circa 1939 Terracotta print, No. 8. Signed and numbered Gili and 8. 66 x 24 x 24 cm BIBLIOGRAPHIE : - René Letourneur, La sculpture française contemporaine, Monaco, Les documents d'art, 1944, repr. p.120. - Herbert Read, Nouveau dictionnaire de la sculpture moderne, Paris, Arted, Éditions d'Art, 1985. - Thierry Roche, Dictionnaire biographique des sculpteurs des années 1920-1930, Lyon, Beau Fixe, 2007. After an exploration of abstract forms around 1930, Gili returned to the human figure. The meeting with Maillol in 1933 certainly left its mark on the young sculptor, who from 1935 onwards began a cycle devoted to the figure of the Athlete. The Spring, which is part of this research, was presented at the exhibition of the group "Forces nouvelles" at the Berri Gallery in 1939. From the ground, the graceful body of a young man emerges in an accentuated contrapposto. One variant exists in bronze and another in terracotta, two copies of which are kept at the National Centre for the Plastic Arts.
