Charles MALFRAY (1887-1940) - Lot 76
Charles MALFRAY (1887-1940) Swimmer's Torso, 1936 Plaster print. 80 x 70 x 30 cm BILIBOGRAPHIE : - Jacques de Laprade, Malfray, Paris, Fernand Moulot, 1944, p.10, 27-28, 45, pl. VII. - Charles Malfray 1887-1940 sculptor, cat. exp., Paris, Galerie Malaquais (5 April - 30 June 2007), Paris, Galerie Malaquais, 2007. Malfray began working on the theme of Swimmers in 1933. As he had done for Le Silence (1916-1918), he elaborated the Torse de Nageuse in a reduced format of about ten centimetres in height. He then enlarged it to fifty centimetres and eighty centimetres. It is in this size that Alexis Rudier cast the bronze print now kept at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon. A voluptuous sensuality emanates from the weight of the flesh and the supple movements of the Torso of Swimmer. The audacious fragmentation of the truncated body somehow inscribes Malfray in the line of Rodin. However, he retains the plastic power that is his own, and which gives the work its originality.
